We also have a few tricks up our sleeves when it comes to storing food, and we would love to share these tips and tricks with you. So let’s take a look at them, shall we?

• Dairy products, such as cheese, yoghurt and milk, should always be stored at the very back of the fridge as this is the coldest area. Cheese is a great food store kept in a food container once opened.

• If you are storing any kind of raw meat or poultry, it should always be stored at the bottom of the fridge. This way, if a bit of meat juice is leaked, it won’t affect other food products. Furthermore, you always want to store raw meat in sealed containers to prevent meat juice from being leaked. Lastly, you should always store raw meat away from any cooked meat you may store in the fridge as well.

• To get the most out of your leftovers, allow them to cool before storing them in the fridge.

• Never allow meat, poultry, seafood, eggs and produce that requires refrigeration to sit out at room temperature for more than two hours. Ideally, you want to refrigerate these food items as quickly as possible.

• Ensure that your fridge and freezer are set at the right temperature. The refrigerator should be at or below 4 degrees, while the freezer temperature should be below -18 degrees.

• Always check storage directions on labels. If you are in doubt, simply read the labels to see how the food should be stored.

• Once your food is ripe, eat it as soon as possible. Otherwise, you risk listeria growing in the fridge.

• If food has gone bad or spoiled, throw it out right away, so it doesn’t contaminate any other foods.

• Always check expiration dates. It might be alright to use a food that has gone a day or two over the expiration date, but generally, the expiration date is a good guideline as to when the food should be eaten by.

• Make sure you clean your fridge regularly and wipe spills right away. This reduces the growth of listeria bacteria, and it is generally just nicer opening a clean, tidy fridge.

• Keep your food covered. Again, this is where food storage containers come in handy.

Let’s take a quick look at what you should do if you lose electricity, as this happens occasionally. If you lose electricity, you first and foremost need to keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. In fact, your fridge will be able to keep your food cold for about four hours if it’s not opened, and most often, your power will probably have come back on during that time. A freezer will keep an adequate temperature for 48 hours if the door is closed. 

However, you may need to open the doors in order to eat, which we completely understand. Therefore, once the power is back on, you first and foremost need to check the temperature in the freezer and fridge. Next, you need to check if all your food is still good. If anything has gone back, throw it in the bin.
